We were recently introduced to songs for seeds – named “Best Music Class” by NY Magazine – with several locations, (and real musicians!) most recently opening in Ridgewood, NJ!
Hi Courtney! Tell us more about songs for seeds and what you offer.
songs for seeds is a weekly interactive class that encourages children, newborn to 5 years old, to sing, dance and play along with their grown up AND very own rockstar teacher. Kids rock out with children’s instruments, as well as a real guitar and instruments from around the world. Our teacher/musicians take students on a musical journey each week through a series of engaging activities. Your kids will experience music and language from cultures around the globe, help create magnetic art murals during a sing-along of well-known nursery rhymes, be amazed and delighted by magic tricks that are used to practice numbers and counting and get fully engaged in a silly game that reinforces the names and sounds of animals.
How fun! What inspired you to start your business?
When my husband and I were gearing up for our wedding, I had a lightbulb moment about my future: I wanted to be a full-time mom but also wanted to keep myself in the workforce and provide extra income for my family! At the time, I was working in management at MTV/Viacom, but as I’ve always had a heart for kids, and dreamed of owning something that spread joy to little ones, their parents, and their communities, we started exploring various ideas in the children’s space.
One day, we decided to drop into a songs for seeds class in NYC—just the two of us, no kids in tow! To our surprise, we had a blast! We sang, laughed, and felt all the good vibes. It was like a magical buzzer, and the rest is history!
Oh, that would definitely be COVID! It turned everything upside down and left us in a whirlwind of uncertainty. With in-person classes shutting down, we watched many other franchises and the HQ of songs for seeds close their doors. Amazingly for us, one of our innovative franchisees (and also our dear friend) came up with the genius idea of Private At-Home PODs—weekly classes in your own space, for you and your friends.
This not only kept us afloat during those tough times, but it also blossomed into a beloved service that families still cherish post-COVID! We turned challenges into opportunities, and now our PODs are a vibrant part of our program, proving that sometimes, a little creativity can lead to something wonderful.
What are you looking forward to for the future of your business?
We’re absolutely buzzing with excitement about the future! Our goal is to expand our presence in New Jersey, Connecticut & Long Island over the coming years and spread our musical joy far and wide. We can’t wait to bring our fun, engaging classes to even more families!
What’s your best piece of advice for moms reading this?
Mom guilt is all too real (trust me, I know!), and juggling work, kids, and everything in between can feel like a circus act sometimes. But believe me there is no better mom for your kids than you. So, embrace the chaos because you’ve got this!
